Condom Use Errors

Condom use failures usually happen because of condom use errors. Research shows that the most common condom use errors among young guys who like guys are

1. Not squeezing the air out of the tip after putting the condom on.
If there is air in the condom when the top partner ejaculates, the semen may “push” the condom off the penis. This increases the chance that the condom will slip off altogether.

2. Using an oil-based lube or not using water-based lube at all.
If you use a latex condom with oil-based lube or with no lube at all, the condom will be more likely to break. Both oil and friction break down the latex material, which is already pretty thin!

Preventing condom use errors and failures
Finding the perfect condom for you
Some guys think that if they’ve tried one condom, they’ve tried them all. But actually, condoms come in so many different shapes, sizes, materials, textures, and thinness. While most condoms will fit most guys just fine, a condom that is too tight may break more easily, and a condom that is too loose may slip off more easily.
Similarly, most guys tend to prefer thinner condoms (like Ultrathin or Skyn). But, if you’re worried about those tearing, extra strength condoms (and extra lube) may be a good solution.

If you have a latex allergy, there are condoms made out of other materials like polyurethane and polyisoprene that work just as well at preventing HIV and STIs.

We recommend trying different brands and styles of condoms until you find ones that work well for you. Finding condoms that feel GREAT when you use them – whether you are the top or the bottom – will make you more likely to use them and make the sex feel better while protecting your health.

Practice makes perfect
Another way to make sure no errors happen when putting a condom on during sex is to practice putting condoms on when you’re alone. Old, expired condoms are great for this.
